The Euphonian
Originally written for my friend Rob Robinson, I decided against it after his gradual hatred of euphonium playing. Instead, I turned to the next best thing, which was a dedication to the late Karl King. A prolific march composer second only to John Philip Sousa, King would write band staples such as Barnum & Bailey’s Favorite, Robinson’s Grand Entrée, and the infamous Melody Shop. The latter influenced this composition greatly, as heard in the dastardly euphonium solo at the trio. I also tried to emulate King’s style, with simple yet jolly melodies, chromatic chord structures and prominent low brass scoring.
